Synopsis: Troy Maxson is a Pittsburgh sanitation worker who once dreamed of a baseball career, but was too old when the major leagues finally admitted black players. As he faces off against the racial barrier at work and his own disappointments, Troy also grapples with his son, Cory, over the teenager’s hope for a football scholarship and with his wife, Rose, who confronts Troy over a child he has fathered with another woman.
The play was quite good and not because of Denzel; the storytelling showed exactly why it won a Pulitzer Prize. The theater is a small, intimate setting which had a feel like the Hilton. The orchestra section had good vantage points, and the moment Denzel hit the stage every woman in the room let out a deep breath. Within about five minutes, we were sucked into the story telling. I have to admit every now and then I just stared in awe at the man that I fell in love with in 1984.
Along with Denzel, there was a notable cast that included Viola Davis and Mykelti Williamson. The actor that played his son Cory was played by Chris Chalk. Following the show, we were standing outside the theater waiting to get a glimpse of everyone. Mykelti Williamson and Chris Chalk came across the street (where the overflow crowd was sent) and signed autographs. I have followed Mykelti's career for a while. The first movie I saw him in was Wildcats with Goldie Hawn, and when I told him that he was surprised I remembered it. Then I told him that I most recently enjoyed him on my favorite show 24. He gave me a hug and wrapped his arm around me to take a picture. No, he was not Denzel but he sure was close.
My trip was short since it was not planned. NYC is alright to visit, but I was sure glad to get away from there. The drivers are crazy, and the pedestrians are crazier. Talk about happy to be home. I felt like following the tradition of the Pope - kissing the ground when I got home. But, the germs - for a germophobe like me - I decided to just say "THER'S NO PLACE LIKE HOME" and leave it at that.

Hey, I'm going to see Fences in a little over a week, so I'm SO glad to hear that Mykelti will sign and take pictures. I absolutely adore him and would completely go see the show for him even if Denzel weren't in it. Now I just have to hope he's in as good a mood the night I see it as when you went. I am curious though, how crazy is the stagedoor? Because I've been to ones where people push and shove and won't let anybody through, and I'm not a very loud person, and I never seem to push back so I usually end up last in line.
From what I could see there was not a lot of pushing or anything around the door. I happened to be in the excess that was put across the street - Mykelti and Chris (the guy that plays Denzel's son) were the only ones from the play that came across the street. He was really really nice, and that makes me like him even more than I already did. I, honestly, did not expect Denzel to come over there because it would surely be a security issue, he did speak to us and wave - Viola Davis stayed out there a while signing autographs as well. I don't think she came across the street but when I left, she was still signing and talking. You will really enjoy the show. It was very good. I had third row so very good vantage point to see everything.
